Qualifications

   

    The critical challenges in our daily lives today involve science and technology, health and human behavior, opportunity and education, economics and organization, and the need to communicate across the cultural, social, and political divisions in our society.

    I bring a unique set of skills and experiences to deal with these challenges, as a

   

     BIOMEDICAL SCIENTIST, with a career of research in brain function and physiology, including medical disorders like diabetes and drug addiction;

    
     TEACHER of college students in biology and the health sciences, and NASA Space Science educator working with middle and high school teachers to relate math, science, art, and history to the human endeavor of space exploration;

    

     SOCIAL ACTIVIST, working to help others through volunteer efforts ranging from neighborhood organization in the inner city of Detroit, to food banks in Boston, to school construction in Nicaragua; 

    

     INNOVATOR, as co-creator of an after-school day care program, primary architect of the doctoral program in Biology at UTEP, and co-author of the grant that established the Border Biomedical Research Center.

   

    ADMINISTRATOR, as chair of academic departments at two universities, and former Program Director of the Border Biomedical Research Center at UTEP.


    ELECTED OFFICIAL, as a four-term Alderman in the City of Newton, MA, where I chaired the Committee on Human Services, and learned the art of listening to my constituents, negotiating with my opponents, and making government work for the people.
