Our politics have divided us and our government has failed us.
When strident voices drive wedges between us over ethnic, regional, racial, and religious differences for political gain, instead of calling on our higher motives for the common causes we all embrace, our politics have failed us.
When government from Washington to Austin to El Paso wallows in corruption and wrangles over back-room power ploys, instead of dealing with the problems that are pulling us down – dysfunctional health care, soaring high school dropouts, oppressive government red tape, regressive taxation, and gaping holes in our social safety net, our elected officials have failed us.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.
I believe that government can and should be a force for fixing the problems in our society, while helping individuals help themselves achieve the goals we all share – good health, stable communities, educated children, secure and respected elders, and a collective will to raise the tide of opportunity for everyone. We, the people, are the government. We hold the power to make the world a better place, if we will seize it.
I want to be part of a process that deals with the real issues that affect people’s lives. I want to bring new ideas of my own, and – just as important – convey your ideas for making government work for the people once again.
Therefore, I announce my candidacy for State Representative of District 78 (upper west side, upper valley, and north central El Paso). I invite you to learn more about me by browsing through this web site. Then I ask you earnestly to join me in an effort to return the focus of government to real issues, with new ideas. At last!
Yours sincerely,

Louis Irwin
